Rich Pirog is director at the Center for Regional Food Systems (CRFS) at Michigan State University. He is responsible for the strategic direction, management, and achievement of mission for the Center. The Center’s work includes food hubs, farm to school and farm to early childhood education, healthy food access and financing, local food policy councils, and assistance for beginning and organic farmers. From 1990-2011 he was associate director and program leader for marketing and food systems at the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Iowa. Pirog’s recent writings and research include economic impact of local and regional food commerce, evolution of the local food movement, equity issues in the U.S. food system, and building effective food system networks.
