Bart Stupak served as the US Representative from Michigan’s 1st congressional district from 1993-2011. He departed Congress in January 2011 and is now a partner in Venable’s Legislative and Government Affairs group. In spring 2011, Mr. Stupak was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government

While in Congress, Stupak was very active on issues related to the protection of the Great Lakes, including opposing sale or diversion of Great Lakes water and drilling for oil and gas under the lakes.

He graduated from Gladstone High School and has degrees from Northwestern Michigan College, Saginaw Valley and Cooley Law School. He worked as an Escanaba police officer and later served as a Michigan State Police Trooper. He also practiced law. Stupak lives in Menominee, Michigan with his wife Laurie. They have one son who lives in California and one deceased son.
