State Senator Roger Kahn, (R), Chair of the Senate Appropriation Committee and a member of the Campaign to Fix the Debt will be the speaker at the Marquette County Economic Club February 18th dinner meeting. This campaign is a national nonpartisan coalition of business leaders, elected officials, community leaders, academics, and individual citizens coming together to call on lawmakers to address the ballooning national debt. In addition to the long-term challenges posed by our debt, lawmakers will also need to confront the “fiscal cliff” that has been pushed off to March of this year.
Senator Kahn, a former Saginaw County commissioner, was elected in November 2004 as the state representative for the 94th District. In November 2006 he was elected as the state senator for the 32nd District, representing Saginaw and Gratiot counties.
After high school in Monroe, Senator Kahn attended Delta College, MSU, and Wayne State University where he received his MD degree. During the summer, he worked for GM and Ford. After medical school, he trained at Beaumont Hospital in Detroit, where he became a cardiologist.
He returned to Saginaw to practice cardiac medicine. He fought for and worked hard to bring and expand cardiac surgery and services to Saginaw. Saginaw has now blossomed into one of the best cardiac centers in the Midwest. He also became president of the Saginaw County Medical Society and chaired its ethics-mediation committee. In 2002, Roger received the “Heart of Gold” Award from the American Heart Association.
Senator Kahn is interested in education and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine for MSU. His background of community involvement also includes Big Brothers, the Rotary Exchange Program, the Saginaw Community Foundation, and the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce Board. He has supported the Saginaw Rescue Mission, been a board member of the Jane’s Street Clinic and donated time to Saginaw’s free medical clinic. He is married, has 8 children and 16 grandchildren.
